Cave on the island of Staffa, Inner Hebrides,
Scotland. It is lined with natural basalt
columns, and is 60 m/200 ft long and 20 m/65
ft high. Fingal, based on the Irish hero Finn
Mac Cumhaill, was the leading character in
Macpherson's Ossianic forgeries. Visited by
Mendelssohn in 1829, the cave was the
inspiration of his Hebrides overture,
otherwise known as Fingal's Cave.
